Texas is four large metropolitan markets and a very large area between them, and a broker's useful buyer list belongs to one of the four. Choosing a firm because it is in your state rather than in your market is the most common mistake sellers make here.

The four markets
Houston is energy, industrial supply, healthcare and logistics, with a cycle that moves buyer confidence. Dallas is corporate services, distribution and finance. Austin mixes a national technology buyer pool with a conventional main street one. San Antonio is services, hospitality and healthcare bought mostly by local operators. Their buyer pools barely overlap.
What crosses the state
Manufacturers, distributors and healthcare services attract out of state consolidators, and for those businesses a firm's national reach matters more than its metro. Trades, hospitality and retail sell locally, where the metro contact book is the product.
Licensing and what to verify
Where a transaction involves real property or a lease, state real estate licensing rules can apply to the intermediary, so ask what the firm holds and get it in writing. Then ask for closed sales in your trade in your metro in the last two years, two seller references, and the minimum fee.
Between the metros
Outside the four large markets the buyer pool for any given business is thin, and a listing left to attract enquiries can sit for months without that meaning the price is wrong. What works there is direct approach to operators in the same trade across the region and into neighbouring states, which is a different service from listing and should be asked for explicitly.
Questions people ask about business broker Texas
Do Texas business brokers need a license?
Business brokerage is not separately licensed, but real estate licensing rules can apply where property or a lease is involved. Ask directly.
Should I use a firm in another Texas city?
Only if their closed sales are in your kind of business. A Dallas list is not automatically useful in Houston.
What commission is normal?
Local firms rarely publish. Published US commissions on this site run from 5% to 15%, with minimums that bind at the lower end.
