Business brokerage is not a licensed profession in most of the United States, so the professional checks that exist for a realtor or a financial adviser simply do not exist here, and a seller has to make their own instead.
Licensing varies and is not a quality signal
Several states require a real estate licence to broker a business, usually because a lease or a building can be part of the sale, and several do not. Whichever applies where you are, a licence tells you somebody passed a real estate exam; it says nothing about whether they have sold a business like yours. Check it, then keep going.
Membership and training
The International Business Brokers Association is the trade body most US brokers point to, and its designations mean the holder took its coursework. Like the licence, it is a floor rather than a recommendation, and it is worth more as a starting filter than as a decision.
The two checks that actually discriminate
Closed deals in your trade, your price band and your county in the last twelve months, with the ability to talk to one of those sellers. And the written terms: commission, dollar minimum, exclusivity length, tail clause and how you terminate. None of the main-street firms read for the record on this site publishes any of that, so you are getting it on a call or not at all.
Questions people ask about business brokers in my area
Do business brokers have to be licensed?
It depends on the state and on what is in the sale. Where real property or a lease is involved, a real estate licence is commonly required. Check your own state's rules; nothing here is advice on them.
How many brokers should I speak to?
Three is enough to see the spread in both the fee and the approach, and the spread is the point: without a comparison there is no way to tell a normal quote from an ambitious one.
Can I check a broker's track record independently?
Partly. Ask for sellers you can call, and check any state licence where one is required. Closed-deal counts are not publicly verifiable in this trade, which is why the reference call matters more than the claim.
